History

Some residents along the McClure River and other connecting tributaries cannot afford proper sewage systems.  Their households plumbing is something called "straight pipes".  Straight pipes go directly from their toilets to the river.  This improper cheap method of plumbing is causing big problems in the area's tributaries (which eventually leads to the drinking water source - John W. Flannagan Reservoir).  Improper onsite wastewater systems have led to high concentrations of fecol coliform bacteria, such as E. coli, in the McClure River.

MRRP has already put residential septic systems into 13 different sites along the McClure River.  Partnering with Dickenson County Health Department and Dickenson County Public Service Authority, we have three more future sites inspected and ready to go.

MRRP has been raising awareness to Dickenson county citizens and students.  MRRP and a team of passionate volunteers have been conducting water quality tests and turning them into Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).  DEQ has provided MRRP with funding and it's own lab to analyze the water quality data.  DEQ will then use the data to update Virginia's impaired waterways list.

In the future, we intend to start a program with the help of volunteers to reforest the Abandoned Mine Land in Dickenson County.  This will help with the sedimentation and acid mine drainage problems.
